Although I’ve gathered the four incenses I will need for the offering stages of the Solstice Ritual (which I picked up at Crystals, Candles and Cauldrons), my plan all along was to grind up a special smudge to cleanse the space prior to opening.

As my plan is to use a charcoal incense burner, I wanted to be able to use the same for the smudge, but just dropping in big pieces of sage in a burner won’t do the trick (I’ve tried). I really need to grind the leaves and sticks up to as little pieces at possible until they essentially become “kindling”… so out comes the mortal and pestle.

I’ve included some blue sage, white sage, lavender, and mug-wort. I like the old skool nature of the mortal and pestle, and this handy white marble one is actually my wife’s. After a long period of banging, smashing, grinding, mashing, and scraping, I ended up with enough to fill a little baggie that will fit inside my resin incense box (that my wife also made me). I tested out a few pinches on my home charcoal burner, and I felt an immediate change in the air (beyond just smelling nice) so I think it’ll do the trick.

And it’s a sad day for music. Not much to say beyond that.
