Today I broke out my trusty Dremel and got to work cutting away the pieces of wood to reveal the Fire Wand within.

I don’t really have a workshop to speak of, and probably just need to break down and get myself a sawhorse, but for today I’ll just make do with clamping onto my porch railing.
The piece is about 3/4 of an inch thick, and I began cutting out a 1.5″ wide section, with the idea that I would bring the edges in more and shoot for a generally square shaped thickness. The thickness varies in parts, and the natural twists in the shape were challenging in parts, but I saved the tougher section for the second initial cut.
There is a natural curve of the grain which reminds me almost of a french grip on a epee, and I think I may bring that out even more when I begin sanding the piece down. In fact, the wood had even naturally cracked and split along the lines I intended to cut out anyway… it really is like that lightning strike was trying to pop this wand right out of the tree.
I did end up using a hacksaw to get through some of the cuts, but ultimately ended up freeing the piece I was going for. I saved the splinters and pieces I cut off, as they may make useful pieces for other objects down the line.
I’m going to spend some more time thinking on it before I start the sanding phase.
